Brazil has used the same electric utility metring and billing system for a long time now: in sum, a technician goes door-to-door every month to read the numbers on residential metres, interval clocks which, in a majority of Brazilian households have been equipped with the same technology for over thirty years. The central challenge is that this technological gap has made it nearly impossible for end consumers to manage daily consumption. Nor do the metres provide any indication as to the times and appliances that consume the most energy, for the simple reason that they are not properly equipped for this purpose.

In its seventh call, the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra), is supporting a record number of 37 actions, which received funds of approximately BRL 3.9 million to sponsor events, international missions, studies and publications on issues prioritised by Brazil and the European Union. All actions are supported in line with the priority themes chosen during the 7th EU-Brazil Summit held in February this year in Brussels, Belgium.
